PVD Prep is a tuition-free 5th through 8th grade public charter school serving students in the City of Providence. The mission of our school is to prepare a diverse group of Providence middle school students for college preparatory high schools. Our goal is for 100% of our graduating eighth graders to earn admission to and succeed in New England’s top high schools.
PVD Prep opened in September of 2021 with fifth and sixth grade. We are adding seventh grade in the 2022-2023 school year and eighth grade in the 2023-2024 school year. We serve 63 students per grade level and will enroll 252 students at full scale.
We offer rigorous and engaging academics. We are committed to excellent teaching and learning. We believe high quality teaching is the most important factor in school success. We believe literacy and numeracy are the heart of a world-class education and unlock doors to college and opportunity.
We also believe that a great education includes a robust curriculum. We are proud to offer in-school and after-school opportunities in dance, the arts and in music.
We believe great schools offer a safe and structured learning environment. This means we have non-negotiable rules. We wear uniforms every day. We do not allow phones in school. We treat others with respect at all times.
We believe more time in school is necessary. Through a longer school day and a longer school year, our students attend about 25% more school than Providence’s other middle schools.
We love family partnership. When your child does a brilliant thing in class, we will stop everything and call you in the moment. We text all the time. We encourage and welcome your active participation in your child’s learning.
We are committed to meeting the needs of all students. We provide a preference in our lottery for students who are enrolling in PVD Prep from lower-performing schools. We joyfully welcome and serve all students, including English learners and students with special learning needs.
We strive to take a trauma informed approach to our work. We know that the pandemic has exacerbated the mental health challenges that young people face. We work to offer counseling and behavioral health support when possible. We also teach social & emotional skills that young people can use to keep themselves healthy.
Middle school is a time of growth, change and exploration. Middle school is a time when students learn more about the world around them and, often, about their own identities. Please know that we honor student identity as a welcoming and affirming school community for students of all sexual orientations, genders, races, religions and ethnicities.
We seek to expose students to a variety of texts from diverse authors with diverse perspectives. We do not shy away from teaching the truth about slavery and racism in American history. We also choose texts that uplift the joy and celebrations of different racial and cultural experiences in American history.
We are committed to our school’s growth. As a small and growing school, we are always seeking to improve and better serve our students and families. We want your feedback on how to be a more effective partner in your child’s learning.
Finally, we are committed to the City of Providence. Our school was founded by families and educators who live and work in the City of Providence. We are committed to our community and seek to reflect the diversity of our city within our school.
